The rankings above were derived from two surveys:

  • The employer survey covered environmental management policies, environmental training and internal consultation, energy consumption, waste production and recycling. It also considered efforts to promote environmental initiatives within business supply chains.
  • This accounted for 70% of the final ranking.
  • The employee survey put 52 statements to staff which they rated from "strongly agree" to "strongly disagree". As with the employer questionnaire, these statements fell into four broad areas: policies and systems, training and motivation, reporting and communications and environmental performance. They included statements on workplace practices - "my organisation always does what is best for the environment" and "my organisation always goes for the cheapest, rather than the most environmentally friendly option"; management attitudes - "my boss encourages me to think about energy saving"; and personal opinions and behaviour - "environmental training I receive at work makes me think differently about what I do at home" and "my colleagues would always turn the heating up rather than put a jumper on". Employee responses to these statements accounted for 30% of the final ranking.
